GRAY WHALE MIGRATION IS LATER THAN NORMAL BUT IT’S LOOKING GOOD.
Thanks to the American Cetacean Society, we can show their latest graph which gives a good indication of how the migration is compared to previous seasons.
Obviously not as brilliant as last year but the Coalition is happy to see the migration is above average. With so little information available on whether the melting Arctic is beneficial to the whales, creating better access to prey, its hard to know the situation.
The Coalition continues to be concerned over the extent of transient orca predation, and the impacts of climate change but with the new Presidency, its unlikely that funds will be made available to NMFS to undertake the necessary research.
So… the graphs and the counts are our best tool. The Coalition will be sending two representatives to Baja in early April and we will ensure good reports from San Ignacio.
